What are Dentures?
A denture is a removable dental prosthesis that serves as a replacement for any missing teeth and surrounding gum tissue. Dentures are available in two varieties: partial dentures, which only replace a specific portion of missing teeth, and complete dentures, which replace all of the teeth inside a patient’s mouth.
Humans have been creating dentures for as long as we’ve been experiencing issues with our teeth, and some of the earliest pairs of dentures date back to 700 BC when they were made from scavenged animal teeth.
Modern-day dentures are significantly more sophisticated and are made of an acrylic resin which is modeled to resemble the gums and teeth. The shape assists the patient with everyday tasks such as chewing and speaking.
When are Dentures Needed?
Dr. Layne will be able to provide you with clear insight into whether or not dentures are the right choice for you and your oral health needs. Below are a few common reasons why some of our patients require dentures:
- Improving a patient’s smile
- Enhancing everyday functions like biting, chewing, digestion, and speech
- Replacing several missing teeth in a dental arch
Getting Dentures: What You Can Expect
The process of getting dentures usually lasts over several visits because it will take time to reproduce accurate molds of your gums, teeth, and jaw to create the perfect pair of dentures to fit your mouth.
Your appointments will usually be broken down as follows:
- Your first few appointments. The first few appointments with your dentist will involve making several “impressions” or molds of your mouth. During these visits, your dentist will refine and shape the molds, so that they are as accurate as possible. They will also make sure that the molds are the right color and size to match your gums and jaw.
- Your final appointment. During your final appointment, any remaining adjustments will be made, and the final version of your dentures will be delivered.
- Follow up appointments. Follow-up appointments may be necessary so that minor adjustments can be made to improve and ensure long-term comfort.
